I recently heard on cnn that "up until the 1960's the mormon church said that blacks could only get to heaven as servants/slaves" and that "blacks could not be ordained morman priests"

is this true?

have the rules been changed?

what changed the rules? how do you personally feel about the rules?

Some mormons may be racist. We all have our failings as we are human. I don't know the church to be racist or have racists leanings. What I know of the tenets of the church preach fairness to your fellow man.

I've not done research on this and it happened long before I joined the church, but the facts as I understand them are: Until the later 1970's black males were not given the priesthood. I am unclear as to the reasoning behind this, though I suspect that it might have been partly due to the prevailing attitudes towards blacks especially in the United States up to that time. Then, again as I have heard it, in the late 70's the first presidency was impressed through much prayer to make a proclamation. One of only a very few times such things have been done. Which allowed the priesthood to be given to all worthy males.

My take on it is; as our prophets continue to receive revelations from on high, occasionally things need to be adjusted.

I feel as this is a living church, not one solely based on ancient texts. There does need to be a certain flexibility. Of course Heavenly Father is the same now as he was in the past and as he will always be. This does not mean that he has revealed everything unto his spirit children here on earth.

I am fine with the rules as currently constituted., because I believe that the leadership of this church is divinely inspired.

I would not want you to believe that we bear any animosity toward the Negro. ’Darkies’ are wonderful people, and they have their place in our Church

I imagine that there are plenty of phrases used in the normal mainstream back then that we would find offense or at least silly today.

This is from TIME 1960, www.time.com/time/magazi...57-2,00.html

......."Think of all the Mormons who have to die before a man gets to be president." A fiery doctrinarian, he has written a dozen books on Mormon dogma. Preaching in Brazil last week, Elder Smith well knew that, like his father and great-uncle, he may soon be called to the post in which, as Prophet of his church, he would communicate directly with the Lord.

hmmmm, plausible, yes. but do tell me, how a man that has such control over his words could say something like that.

I don't have any answers, i just think it is a little strange that in the original article, joseph f. smith is so careful about his words, and then in the footnotes, says something about darkies and their place in the church.

I look at the rest of the statement and it seems perfectly positive. Which leads me to believe that he wasn't coming from a place of malice. Thus my feeling that it wasn't as derogatory a term back then, as it is today. A lot of social change has come about in the past 40 years. Things are a lot more PC

            quote from wikepedia:

The radio antics of "Amos 'n' Andy", which featured white actors impersonating blacks, were straight from the minstrel stage. The popular radio show lasted more than a decade and then moved to television, utilizing black actors, in 1951. Under fire from critics as being demeaning to blacks, it ran until only 1953.

            en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darky

yes, things were not as pc then, but by the early 50's, the word darky was not used because it was considered a slur

but then again, until 1978, it was impossible for a black man to enter into the celestial kingdom, or even step foot into the mormon temples, not even to clean them. yet 12 year old boys and girls, as long as they were not black, were allowed in the temple

This is just silly. Of course Mormons aren't racist. In my Institute class right now there are several minority students. Missionaries are bringing the gospel to people all over the world. Reaching out to souls no matter what color they are.

      <of course mormons are'nt racsit>

is it not true that once upon a time (up util the 1960's) blacks were only allowed into the celestial kingdom as servants?

is it not true that blacks could not be mormon preists until the late 1970's?

did GOD change the bible in the late 20th century to include blacks? Why did he (GOD) not allow black men the same equality as whites until then?

do you consider the previously mentioned policys racist? or at least unequal?

I don't know where you get your information, Jamie. Everyone has the opportunity to go to the Celestial Kingdom if they live their lives worthy. How heavenly Father challenges each of us is a matter for him, and it's not for me to question him. My dad told us about the war in heaven, when Satan was cast out, and how some people were brave and noble in that war and some weren't. Which families we're born into is a result of how we fought then, and some people need more challenges and obstacles than others. But the opportunities are the same, aren't they?

Also I think you're confusing scripture with revelation, Jamie. God didn't change the Bible. He instructed the prophet on how best to lead his people. That's much different, don't you think?

The American black fellah, well all black fellah's, could not hold the priesthood, until the 1970's, as the leadfers, of the church, did not seem to think they had a soul. But now it seems they do, and are now able too, hold the priesthood, and go to heaven.

But ol Jo Smith, was a ho, just go and look at section, 132 of the D & C. It 'tis all about men having many wives, too breed with.
